Dental emergencies in children can be scary and it’s important to handle them quickly to avoid a serious dental issue. After an accident or dental injury, your child may have a hard time focusing on what you are saying or doing. But there are some steps you can take to help them feel better and get through the emergency. The first step is to stay calm. This will help your child stay calm, too. If you are scared or upset, they will be too. Try to explain what is happening in a way that they can understand.

Avoiding Dental Emergencies

Children are going to fall down and dental injuries are going to happen. The only way to help is to make dental injury less likely to happen. The best way to avoid dental injuries in children is to make sure they wear a mouthguard when playing sports or doing any activity that may result in a fall or injury to the mouth. Mouthguards can help protect the teeth from being knocked out or fractured. They can also help protect the lips, tongue, and cheeks from being injured.

If the tooth cannot be put back in the socket or the child is really young and may swallow it, put it in a container of milk or water and take it to the dentist right away.

A cracked tooth can be very painful and needs to be seen by a dentist right away. In the meantime, the child should avoid chewing on that side of the mouth and try to keep the area clean. Next, put a cold compress on the area to reduce swelling. If there is bleeding, put a piece of gauze on the area and bite down for about 10 minutes.

When a tooth is chipped, the first thing you should do is find the pieces of the tooth and rinse them off with water. If you can’t find the pieces, that’s okay, too. Next, put a cold compress on the area to reduce swelling. If there is bleeding, put a piece of gauze on the area and bite down for about 10 minutes. See a dentist right away.

A toothache is usually caused by a cavity or an infection and can be very painful. The child should see the dentist as soon as possible to have the problem fixed. In the meantime, the child can take over-the-counter pain medication to help with the pain. Cold compresses applied to the area may also help.
