Our appliances are smaller and we offer an advanced, self-ligating bracket, and also offer clear brackets as an option. While the experiences may be similar, the materials are now stronger and more resilient to avoid standard wear and tear, and the wires are space-age technology that move the teeth with light, continuous force.

Parts Of Braces

Traditional braces are the most common type of braces. There are several parts to standard orthodontic braces including metal brackets, archwires and ligatures.

Brackets

Brackets are secured to the teeth using bonding cement. These brackets have built-in features to control the movement and angle of the teeth including a slot for the archwire, allowing for controlled movement of the teeth. Tie wings stand out beyond the base of the bracket to attach the ligatures which will secure the wire to the bracket.

Once orthodontic brackets are cemented onto the teeth, an archwire is placed within the slots of the brackets to begin treatment. Archwires come in various shapes and materials largely dependent on the stage of treatment and the type of tooth movement that is required.

Once the archwire is positioned within the slot of the orthodontic bracket, it is secured in place with either an elastic or stainless steel ligature. Elastic ligatures come in a variety of colors and are changed at every visit.

This option appeals to those who wish to hide the fact that they are wearing braces but need them to accomplish their orthodontic goals.

SmartClip™ Self-Ligating Brackets

The SmartClip™ appliance by 3M Unitek is a unique self-ligating passive bracket system that uses a specially designed clip in the bracket to hold the archwire in place.

The special, customized self-ligating brackets are computer-designed using a unique nickel-titanium metal alloy, giving you a beautiful smile with more comfort, and in less time than with traditional metal braces. Another advantage of SmartClip™ braces is that they don’t involve opening or closing devices in order to place the archwires. This means fewer adjustments are needed.

This technology creates less friction and results in greater comfort for the patient. In addition, SmartClip™ brackets often reduce both treatment time and the number of adjustments that are usually performed. With the self-ligating braces, color ties are not needed. SmartClip™ self-ligating braces are very comfortable and without the color ties, there is less food and plaque accumulating around the brackets. Also, with SmartClip™ braces, the appointments are shorter since there are no color ties to change.
